About Hearth Ledger

Hearth Ledger is a small, independent site about the money that runs a household: what goes into the shopping basket, what the meter and the monthly bills add up to, and what it really costs to get to work. Each guide picks one everyday question and works it through with a plain example you can redo with your own numbers.

Our three subjects

  • Food & Grocery Budget – weekly grocery limits, unit prices, meal planning against food waste, bulk buying and the real cost of eating out.
  • Home & Utility Bills – reading an energy bill, appliance running costs, saving for repairs, the full cost of renting and tracking water and heating use.
  • Cars & Commuting – cost per mile, comparing ways to get to work, maintenance budgets, loan totals and fuel habits.

How we write

The figures in our examples are invented, round and labeled as illustrations; we do the arithmetic in the article so you can follow every step. They are not quotes of current prices, rates or rules, which change and differ from place to place. We do not recommend particular stores, brands, banks, lenders or insurers, and nobody pays us to mention them.

Everything here is general education rather than personal advice; the Disclaimer explains what that means.

Fixing mistakes

If a sum looks wrong or something has gone out of date, write to [email protected]. We read every message and correct articles when needed.
